There are any number of reasons why, despite my best efforts, I just don’t like the NBA. The play, often nights, is sloppy and unmotivated. The season is entirely too long. The playoffs have too many days between games particularly in the early rounds. But no reason for my NBA apathy is more clear than my disdain for the way franchises bow to the whim of their player. Vince Carter whined about wanting to be traded. He got it. Tracy McGrady wanted out of Orlando. He got it. Pau Gasol was a complete malcontent in Memphis and the Grizzlies gave him away for Kwame Brown and a bag of Fritos. Add Jason Kidd to the list of the NBA’s most talented whiners. After complaining for what feels like six years about how badly he wanted out of New Jersey, Dallas stepped up and made an offer, sending half of their bench to New Jersey in exchange for Kidd, who was originally drafted by the Mavericks before heading off to Jersey.

Not so fast, George hasn’t agreed to be included in the deal and has, for the moment, delayed it. While I don’t think anything can stop this trade from happening, I think that NBA franchises need to stand firm on trading unhappy stars. While you don’t want a toxic personality in your locker room but chances are, with a player of Kidd’s ability, you aren’t likely to get value. GMs and owners need to send a clear message to players that they will abide by the terms of their contract or they can sit out until that contract expires. Instead the message they’re sending is that they’re spineless and easily manipulated and if the players stomps his feet loud enough and long enough he’ll get what he wants.

Still wonder why the majority of the country doesn’t care about professional basketball?

The Chicago Bulls find themselves in a very peculiar situation this morning.

Bulls GM John Paxson is faced with this question do you essentially trade away all your young talent from a team that went to the playoffs last year for the best player in the world?

Of course there’s a little more to it than that. Any trade, one could presume, that would involve Kobe Bryant going to Chicago would have to include Luol Deng. As the Lakers aren’t likely to see the value in acquiring Tyrus Thomas, Joakim Noah and Ben Gordon, giving they are sending the best player on the planet to the Windy City in exchange. It gets even more complicated when you consider that Bryant is the only player in the league with a no-trade clause in his contract and he has made it known that he wants to play with Luol Deng and likely wouldn’t accept a trade to Chicago if Deng is involved going the other way.

I’m not going to say this deal is dead in the water because the Lakers front office has been known to do some colossally stupid things (trading Shaq comes to mind) but they are faced with the reality that Kobe can, and most likely will, opt out of this contract in a year, leaving the Lakers with nothing.

But that can’t enter into the decision-making for Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak. He has to try to win now and trading the best player in the league for the 2005 College All-American team is an awful, terrible idea, regardless of what happens in a year.

Am I convinced this trade won’t happen? No. Do I think that Kupchak is desperate enough to pull the trigger and forgo a season of Kobe and Phil sniping at each other in the papers? Yes.

I am tired of the Michael Vick story. I’ve made my position on this matter unmistakably clear. The league, in keeping with the precedent set forth by the commish’s Pacman Jones ruling, have to suspend Michael Vick. I had a feeling that the animal rights’ groups would pressure the league and the franchise so heavily that they would have to make Vick take an indefinite leave of absence. And that’s what’s happening now. That being said, I’m over it. I don’t want to hear anymore about it on sports talk radio or read more columns from reporters across the country about how the league should throw the book at the (soon-to-be former) Falcons QB. I agree with all of those positions, by and large, but I’m done with this story. There is such a thing as media over-saturation and I’m there.

To be honest, I didn’t find this all that spectacular. The questions were predictable and kind of average. They certainly were no different than any question posed to the candidates during a traditional debate. I’ve decided that while I think Obama is the more viable candidate and certainly someone I would vote for, I love Joe Biden, even if he puts his foot in his mouth — a lot. Last night for example, the girlfriend and I watched the Rock of Love premiere (which is kind of like a really skanky, drunken trainwreck you can’t help but watch), the finale of America’s Next Top Model (not sure which circuit, not sure it’s a good sign that I know that the seasons on ANTM are actually called “circuits”) and then watched Making the (not to be be mistaken with Da) Band 4, where Diddy’s theatrics are starting to wear me out. I like how every time he pulls up to the band’s apartment in his Phantom, they play some really awesome hip-hop song to announce him. I think I’d like that same service for myself. I’m going to hire a band to follow me around and play AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” for me every time I walk into a room or maybe Bloc Party’s “Helicopter.”

I feel the need to sort of blow one perception completely out of the water. As you may have been aware, ESPN aired its psuedo-award show, the ESPYs, last night (I was aware but was watched Rock of Love with Bret Michaels anyway). I just heard one of its talking heads on the radio, patting the network on the back and suggesting that the ESPYs had finally arrived and was “The Oscars or the Emmys of Sports.”

No notion could possibly be more preposterous. To suggest that the ESPYs mean serve any other function than to further exalt ESPN to its rightful place as the Worldwide Leaders in Sports is completely ridiculous. Say some punt returner wins an ESPY for Play of the Year. If that same player were to go to his respective team when his contracted expired and say, “Hey, I think I deserve to make this much as an ESPY winner.” Chances are he’d get laughed out of the room. Now if an actor won an Oscar or an Emmy, their value to studios or networks increases exponentially and it can be used as a bargaining chip. The ESPYs are nothing more than a completely contrived product of ESPN and should not be taken seriously in any way, shape or form.

There is NOTHING going on right now in sports that anyone cares about. The All-Star game? Not really. NASCAR? Nope. It’ll likely be another sports-free weekend for yours truly unless Federer and Nadal meet in the Wimbledon final.. or Roddick and Nadal … ok, I guess I’ll be watching tennis Sunday morning.

After a Fourth of July that included Camille’s margerhita pizza, a two-hour nap and a couple episodes of A&E’s “The First 48,” I’ve returned to my outpost on Airport Road.

I’m thinking this is going to be the format of the blog for a little while. I’ll include a mini-take and then the daily line of links and stories on my news reader that I find of interest — at least until it becomes logical to talk about college or pro football.

This is just a note to the Worldwide Leader, competitive eating is not a sport in any way, shape or form. I find it anatomically impressive that Joey Chestnut can shove 66 hot dogs in his face but I do not and will never consider that to be an athletic feat. Oh and another thing, this “bracket” of who’s the most popular athlete is a ridiculous and pointless exercise. Does anyone really care if LT is more popular than David Beckham? Or if Dwyane Wade is more “now” than Shaun White?

What’s notable about this story isn’t that it involves Al Gore or drugs but that police clocked Albert Gore III going 100 MPH in his Toyota Prius. I didn’t even know you could get a Prius up to 100. I wonder if the cops pulled him over just to ask him how he did it.

LSU coach Les Miles slurps the greatness of the SEC and rips the Pac-10, specifically USC. I would looooove to see a USC/LSU bowl game this year.

The NFL has officially lost it. The Associated Press is reporting that the league is only going to let news organizations post 45 seconds of game footage online per day.

The Maryland State Youth Soccer Association is taking a stand against out of control coaches.

The Buffalo News’ Allen Wilson believes Sabres fans will get over their frustration over the recent departure of co-captains Daniel Briere and Chris Drury.

The Detroit Free-Press examines what you can do with your $600 besides spending it on an iPhone.

Chauncey Billups’ agent calls a report that his client signed a five-year deal with the Pistons, “a vicious rumor.” The language used seems a bit dramatic but then again the Chick Fil-A chicken nuggets I had at lunch today were a culinary masterpiece the likes of which have never been achieved in the history of food.

Thanks for the memories. Grant Hill has bolted Orlando for the Phoenix Suns.

John Feinstein was right.. this really is the worst sports month of the year. My library of college football media guides have yet to arrive, baseball is something I endure rather than enjoy and the start of training camp is about three weeks away. I was thinking about blogging on the over-the-top theatrics of Serena Williams last night but I’ll bite my tongue.. everyone seems to think it was gutsy for reasons I’ll apparently never understand. She said in an interview that she was willing to die out there. I don’t know about you but I haven’t heard of anyone dying of leg cramps before but I’m sure there were some undocumented cases of leg cramp fatalities during the civil war. What I find most mystifying about watching that match is why she thought it would be a good idea to whack herself in the leg with her racquet. I mean I guess I can relate, when I have a headache at work I usually just take the handset of my phone and repeatedly thump myself in the face and head until my headache goes away or until I’m unconscious and bleeding from my ears. Serena, just play tennis. Spare me the performance.

According to the paper, the Sabres and Drury had agreed on a 4-year deal in the fall but a contract was never presented to Drury to sign. Nice.

A discussion on a Pittsburgh sports talk show about the planned walkout by Pirates fans at Saturday’s game turned heated. I watched the video on the TV station’s website and the altercation in question is about 20 minutes into a show where the central topics of discussion are Zach Duke, Freddy Sanchez and Jim Tracy.
If this isn’t a sign that the world, as we know it, is coming to an end, I don’t know what is: Cavs forward and walking muscle spasm Anderson Varejao could make more than $6 million next year.
