Friday’s Line

Friday, August 31st, 2007 by patrickdonohue

The Labor Day weekend is upon us and for those of us here in Destin, it means one last weekend before Summer and the tourists it brings is officially over for the year.

Quick update on my picks for the week, I went 9-for-11 last night with Ball State and Iowa State being my only two losses. Ball State lost to Miami of Ohio in the last seconds of that game in Muncie and Iowa State just didn’t show up to play at home against Kent State. Can’t win ‘em all.

Tuesday’s Line

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007 by patrickdonohue

Watching last night’s Falcons/Bengals preseason game, something very profound occured to me: I really like Joey Harrington.

Watching the former Lions/Dolphins quarterback run down the field after throwing a touchdown pass in a PRESEASON game, you begin to understand what Harrington has been through. In Detroit, he had absolutely terrible teams around him.  George Blanda, Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, Dan Marino, John Elway, Tom Brady or Peyton Manning couldn’t have won with those Detroit teams. Frankly, Lions GM Matt Millen is a clown and that he still has that job today is mystifying.

Now that Harrington is going to be the Falcons starter, you really want the guy to succeed and do well. He badly wants to be embraced by his teammates, by the fans and by the city and I hope all of that happens for him this season. He wasn’t embraced by any of the above in Detroit, which many sportswriters claim in the worst sports city in the America. I figure there must be some truth to it because everytime someone says something negative about Detroit, people from Detroit get all tight. My guess is that they know their town’s a hellhole and the way they treated Harrington is disgraceful. Good luck, Joey.

Late Wednesday Line

Thursday, August 9th, 2007 by patrickdonohue

After successfully making it back from my car without suffering heat stroke, I’m ready to post today’s line. But first this thought on Facebook. Today I added several applications to my page including the virtual book shelf, CD rack and magazine rack. I think this is a cool idea but I can’t help but wonder if, as Facebook users, we are not better off if the old facebook. You know the one where you couldn’t have an application on your profile that allowed you to poop on your friends or throw food or engage in vampire/werewolf/zombie secretarian warfare. The site might be less effective at curbing your office boredom but would be a whole heck of a lot faster.

Reggie Miller is considering a comeback… with the Boston Celtics. As a Pacer fan, I was happy to see Reggie go when he did. He couldn’t play defefnse, was inconsistent from beyond the arc and was a shell of the player he was in his prime when he finally called it quits. But if I were in the building when Reg makes his return to Indy, I’d boo him out of the building. What about a little loyalty for a fanbase that stood by you and worshipped you when you stank on ice? And now you’re going to comeback for one last grab at a ring and you think the Celts have the best chance of taking you there with Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce? Shameless.

TAKEO SPIKES IS AN E-A-G-L-E!

Despite the fact that Eagles management has claimed that there’s nothing wrong with the linebacking corps, it appears they were exploring their options and landed two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Takeo Spikes for defensive tackle Darwin Walker and a conditional late-round pick in next year’s draft.

Ignoring for a moment the obvious continuing ineptitude of the Bills’ front office, this is a great move for the Eagles. Being a fan, I’ve long complained that the linebacking corps has been the weak link of the defense. The front office still believed in Mark Simoneau  long after fans had given up on him for being too small to stop the run and too slow to be effective in pass coverage. Dhani Jones was kind of a sexy acquisition after the departure of Carlos Emmons to the Giants but as it turns out he dresses much better than he plays. Matt McCoy is a tough player but maybe more of the Larry Izzo mold and is not a starter in this league. The Eagles drafted Chris Gocong last year but I remain skeptical that he can make the jump from college defensive end to NFL linebacker. There are players who have made that jump but the Eagles need to keep in mind that not every player has the ability of Demarcus Ware.

Finally a deal that makes sense. As a fan, I’m worried that they passed on re-upping Donté Stallworth (who may be headed for trouble) to give Kevin Curtis, a lifetime slot receiver, number 1 or number 2 receiver money but this Spikes deal makes all the sense in the world.

If Broderick Bunkley can wake up from his coma and Mike Patterson continues to come on, in addition to the signing of Montae Reagor, Walker becomes obviously expendable. Kelly Holcombe is also a proven backup who can come on if A.J. Feely comes out and stinks on ice.

As an Eagles fan, I applaud this move. We got a great player and didn’t give up our first round pick (which we should use on Reggie Nelson… I’m just saying.. or Aaron Ross). As the friend of a Bills fan, I feel bad… and I’m over it.
