Ending an unspectacular tenure at Texas Tech, Bobby Knight has resigned as Red Raiders head coach. But let’s not mince words, he’s quitting.
I killed Bobby Petrino for slinking out of Atlanta mid-season and taking the job at Arkansas and I’m going to equally harsh on Bobby Knight for quitting on his team mid-season.
What shocks me about Knight is how many in Indiana still have a reverence, a sickening adulation, for who this man is and what he represents. They can’t be proud of him now, can they? Simply put, Knight needs to retire. He’s a dinosaur, a relic. The elite players in the country, the Michael Beasleys, the O.J. Mayos, the Kevin Loves, aren’t going to go to Lubbock to get berated, even for a year, when they can go to Chapel Hill or East Lansing and get treated like royalty. There is no place in the modern college game for Bob Knight and his antics. It was time for him to go.
But let’s not call this retirement or resignation, let’s call it what it is, it’s quitting in the middle of the season. Once a selfish jerk, always a selfish jerk.
